Persistent Engagement Marketing

Recently the Joint Forces Commander, Gen. James Mattis, replaced the old term “persistent conflict” with the more descriptively correct “persistent engagement”.

This in my mind also describes the efforts that we as online marketers have to make if we are going to experience lasting success in this market place.  We engage in “persistent engagement marketing” since the key to really branding on the internet requires a continuous targeted effort which constantly needs to be tweeked as trends and online shopping tools change.

I recently worked with a client to whom I had to explain the need to change an approach mid stream because of changes in the search engine algorithms and the shopping activities of their target market due to the worsening recession.  As our economy resets it will be the companies who are capable of this kind of persistence and flexibility who will be victorious.

A “persistent engagement” marketing campaign should include frequent input from the client and other subject matter experts in their organization about the trends in the field so that search engine optimizers can constantly seek out and implement new ways of reaching their customers with the latest and greatest products and services.

Sure, some business owners are really starting to “get” why they need a social media presence but where do small business owners start in creating the framework for an effective social communications strategy?

This type of strategy takes into consideration all of the available online resources and enables you to choose the best channels and tools for your campaign.

It takes into consideration and embraces many of today's most popular social networking channels, including some that may not really be marketing channels for example twitter. 

I recently communicated my idea, “that the implementation of a social media strategy is a process more then just one or two events.” The engine that keeps that process moving forward is the discipline of being persistent in "keeping on message" both in social media and your web site presence

Developing a compelling brand cause is important.  This is the guiding force for the content you present through social media platforms.

I will guide the decisions you make on questions such as:

Why would you share that content?
Why would you make that announcement?
Why would you reply to a blog post or comment?

It’s not what you sell: it’s why you’re here, in this particular context, at this particular time.

Being persistent in your engagement within the online communities that you are a part of communicates your willingness to make that investment versus the spammy “get rich quick” schemes that always want to “cash in” before they’ve even added anything of value. It’s this approach that is becoming very common as social media is introduced to the masses as an arsenal of tools, rather than access points into groups of people, ideas and communities.
